Complex decongestive physiotherapy for pretibial myxoedema.

چکیده
227 Lymphoedema is a chronic, debilitating disorder resulting from congenital abnormality of the lymphatic system (primary lymphoedema) or acquired causes (secondary lymphoedema). Complex decongestive physiotherapy is the ‘mainstay’ intervention for lymphatic insufficiency comprising manual lymph drainage, in selected cases intermittent pneumatic compression, multilayered compression bandaging with appropriate padding, exercise, and meticulous skin care (Consensus Document of the International Society for Lymphology 2003). Manual lymph drainage encourages fluid mobilisation, protein reuptake from interstitial space, and softening of fibrotic tissue. Pneumatic compression aids manual drainage. Short-stretch bandages have low resting and high working pressure, which means that contracting muscles will be compressed and aid lymph flow. Exercise while using multilayered compression also aids manual lymph drainage. Once active therapy is completed, patients continue maintenance therapy with custom-fitted stockings. As symptoms become more severe, the active phase has to be repeated.

Thyrotoxic pretibial myxoedema in Asian patients in Singapore.
Over a 5-year period, three cases of thyrotoxic pretibial myxoedema were encountered. The incidence of pretibial myxoedema in Chinese thyrotoxic patients in Singapore was 0-7yo (03y. in females and 1F6% in males). One of the three patients also had thyroid acropachy. The incidence of thyrotoxic pretibial myxoedema in Singapore is compared with that in the literature and the aetiology briefly re...

Kriss et al. (1964) postulated that the destruction of the thyroid gland by disease (hyperthyroidism or thyroiditis) or by therapeutic agents (especially 1311) results in the release of an antigen of thyroid cell origin which then stimulates the production of the antibody, LATS. The antibody is then fixed to the tissues of the legs, the phenomenon being facilitated by a number of factors such a...
متن کاملElephantiasic Pretibial Myxoedema in a Patient with Graves’ Disease
Pretibial myxoedema (PM) is a late and rare manifestation of autoimmune thyroiditis, particularly in patients with Graves’ disease. It occurs in 0.5% to 4.3% of patients [1], and is usually associated with high levels of thyroid hormones. The classification of PM includes four forms: non-pitting edema; plaque; nodular; or elephantiasis [1]. Mild PM often regresses spontaneously, but the severe,...
متن کاملComplex decongestive physiotherapy decreases capillary fragility in lipedema.
Lipedema is a disproportional obesity featuring frequent hematoma formation due to even minor traumatic injuries. On the basis of clinical observations, complete decongestive physiotherapy diminishes the incidence of hematomas due to minor injuries beyond leg volume reduction. Hematoma development may be caused by altered capillary resistance (CR) or altered capillary fragility (CF). We measure...
